Violent acts by Israeli settlers ‘a disgrace’: Israeli activist calls for international pressure

In an interview with Al Jazeera, former General Director of Peace Now, Yariv Oppenheimer, stated that the recent spike in settler violence in the occupied West Bank is not sudden but part of a two-and-a-half-year "project of the government" to move Palestinians off their land. He said the government sponsors and supports "Jewish terror," and that settlers act with impunity because the Israeli police and security forces are ordered not to enforce the law against them. Oppenheimer argued that the current government represents a "dead end," and that the only way to improve the situation is through international pressure—particularly from the United States. He expressed hope that a future government would be more obligated to enforce Israeli law and deal with settler violence, despite skepticism that the current government will ever do so.
