The United States is no stranger to extreme weather — but it's getting worse. Wildfires now burn through more than 3 million hectares a year, almost double the rate of the 1990s. Floods, both major and minor, are hitting somewhere in the country on 8 out of every 10 days. Storms and hurricanes are intensifying too, with more Category 3+ storms on record than ever before. But disasters aren't the only threat. Summers themselves are getting hotter and longer — and the extreme heat driving that shift is quietly becoming one of the biggest risks to public health and the environment alike.
