UK rejects Milei’s Falkland Islands claims as a sovereignty dispute continues

The UK has rejected Argentine President Javier Milei’s latest claims over the Falkland Islands, reaffirming its position that the islands remain British. UK officials, including Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband and Health Secretary Wes Streeting, have stressed that the wishes of the islanders are central to Britain’s position. The sovereignty dispute between the UK and Argentina dates back centuries. French settlers established a presence on the islands in the 18th century, before Britain took control in 1833. Argentina maintains that the islands were seized by force, while the UK points to the islanders’ right to self-determination. The dispute led to war in 1982, when Argentina and the UK fought for control of the islands. Decades later, the sovereignty question remains unresolved, with Argentina continuing to claim the islands, which it calls the Malvinas.
