Two workers rescued alive from Nepal tunnel nine days after devastating floods

Nine days after devastating Himalayan floods struck Nepal, rescuers have pulled two workers alive from a hydropower tunnel in the hard-hit Rasuwa district, in what has been described as a miraculous development. Local media showed the workers being pulled from the ground before medical teams checked them at the site. There had been no signs of life until the previous day, when a Nepalese lawmaker announced that rescuers had detected survivors. The dramatic breakthrough has raised hopes that more workers could still be trapped inside tunnels at several hydropower projects. Rescue operations remain extremely difficult because of the remote and inaccessible terrain, with the only open land route taking 18 hours from Kathmandu. Helicopters are delivering aid and evacuating the wounded, but damaged infrastructure and the mountainous geography continue to hamper efforts. Nepal's prime minister has also called on the international community to take climate change more seriously as the country confronts the devastating impact of the disaster.
