Trump got almost everything but annexation in Greenland deal: Analysis

Richard Weitz, a senior fellow at the NATO Defense College and security analyst with Wikistrat, says the new US-Denmark Greenland security deal is being hailed by Trump supporters as a diplomatic win, even though it falls well short of the president's earlier ambition to fully control the territory. Weitz says this fits a pattern: Trump has also floated annexing Canada, the Panama Canal and Venezuela, but has repeatedly backed down in the face of local opposition and settled for less. In Greenland's case, he says, Trump secured almost everything he wanted except formal annexation. Most importantly, Weitz says, the agreement defuses a major source of tension within NATO that dominated Trump's first term, freeing the alliance to focus on Russia's conventional threat to Ukraine and hybrid, political and subversive threats to NATO members, including a recent report that Russia hired criminals to assassinate dissidents in the US.
