Early voting rises in Virginia amid fight over Trump's mail ballot limits

Voters in heavily Democratic northern Virginia are casting their ballots early, part of a broader national shift in how Americans vote. In 2024, 32 percent of voters cast ballots early in person, up from 21 percent in the 2022 midterms, according to Pew Research Center. President Donald Trump has repeatedly questioned voting by mail, and his administration has sought new restrictions on mail ballots, though the Supreme Court has blocked those restrictions from taking effect for these midterms. But access is just one issue on voters' minds. Many cite the economy and cost of living, while some voice strong opposition to the US war in Iran and its sanctions. Even in this Democratic stronghold, Republican voters back the administration's policies on taxes, regulation and government spending, with some saying they are embracing early voting for the first time.
