Trump and Xi extend trade truce to January after high-profile Washington visit

Chinese President Xi Jinping's three-day visit to the US has ended with plenty of ceremony but comparatively little concrete progress. The one substantive outcome: an extension of the trade truce, originally due to expire in November, now pushed to January to give both sides more time to negotiate. President Donald Trump called the visit a success, saying it strengthened his personal relationship with Xi and would benefit the US in the long run, describing it as "very positive for both countries." Xi, for his part, was clear that China has specific aims going into future talks, chiefly being treated more fairly, and laid out guidelines for what matters to Beijing going forward. The two leaders are set to meet twice more before year's end: at a summit in China in November, if Trump agrees to attend, and at the G20, to be held at a Trump property in Florida in December.
