Iran's foreign minister waits in New York for a US response

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed late Friday that Tehran has given the US a proposal to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, saying Washington now has the choice. The plan revives the deal that collapsed in June, but cuts the timeline from 60 days to seven: fighting would stop on all fronts, including Lebanon; Washington would lift its blockade, waive oil sanctions and release frozen Iranian funds, the strait would reopen by day six, and talks on Iran's nuclear programme would begin on day seven. Washington has yet to respond. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott told Al Jazeera, "I'm not going to negotiate through the media. But the president holds all the cards here." Iran has meanwhile been working multiple diplomatic channels: Araghchi is reportedly staying in New York until Monday, awaiting a response, as the war enters its eighth month.
