Six months of war push Iran’s economy to breaking point

More than six months of war have left Iran’s economy under intense strain, forcing families to choose what they can still afford and what they must live without. Years of sanctions are compounded by a plunging currency of about 2 million rials to the dollar, 65% inflation and food prices up 128%. Shopkeepers in Tehran say imports are scarce and customers are cutting back as war damage nears an estimated $270bn and tens of thousands of homes and public services are hit. While control over the Strait of Hormuz gives Iran some leverage, millions of Iranians face a more immediate question: how long they can bear the cost.
