Qatar, Turkiye, Indonesia and Pakistan have signed a new defence industry agreement in Doha to jointly develop and produce military equipment and defence systems. The memorandum of understanding includes plans to establish a defence production hub in Qatar, with cooperation focused on technology transfer, joint manufacturing and strengthening capabilities against ballistic missiles, drones and cyberattacks. The agreement comes amid a changing regional security environment following the US-Israeli war with Iran, which has exposed vulnerabilities in existing defence systems and supply chains. Qatar's Barzan Holdings has been expanding international defence partnerships for years, and the new agreement aims to combine the four countries' technological expertise, military experience and industrial resources. The initiative also reflects a growing emphasis on regional self-reliance and developing affordable systems to counter increasingly sophisticated threats. Analysts say strengthening domestic defence capabilities can complement diplomacy and deterrence without undermining existing partnerships with Western countries. Al Jazeera's Osama Bin Javaid and Abdulla Bandar al-Etaibi, Assistant Professor of International Affairs at Qatar University, discuss the agreement and its implications for regional security.
