Northern Ireland Orange Order march: Tensions remain over planned Garvaghy Road parade

Tensions remain high in Portadown, Northern Ireland, as residents of Garvaghy Road prepare for further protests over a planned Orange Order parade through their predominantly Catholic, nationalist community. Hundreds of residents blocked the road after a High Court gave the Protestant Orange Order permission to parade through the area, something that has not happened there for almost 30 years. Drumcree was the scene of intense sectarian violence and protests in the 1990s, before the Good Friday Agreement. Negotiations are under way involving the Garvaghy Road community, Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Bryant and representatives of the Protestant community and Orange Order. Catholic residents say allowing the parade could undermine the peace that has endured for decades, while the Orange Order argues its legal right to parade should not be blocked by what it describes as an unlawful protest.
