Netanyahu defends Israel's war strategy in UNGA speech after mass walkout

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has addressed the United Nations General Assembly, defending Israel's military actions and declaring that the country will continue to fight what he described as a seven-front war. Netanyahu focused on Iran's nuclear programme, October 7, 2023, Hamas and Hezbollah, while praising US President Donald Trump and US-Israel military cooperation. He also defended Israel's actions in Gaza and the wider region, and criticised international coverage of the conflict. A number of delegates left the General Assembly hall as Netanyahu took the podium. He described those who walked out as “moral cowards” and continued his speech to a largely supportive audience in the public gallery. Al Jazeera analysts Ariel Cohen and Marwan Bashara assess the speech, including Netanyahu's focus on Israel's military strength, Iran and the Palestinian issue. Cohen argues that Netanyahu's remarks were aimed heavily at an Israeli audience ahead of an election, while Bashara disputes several of Netanyahu's claims and describes the speech as a repetition of previous arguments. Netanyahu remains wanted by the International Criminal Court over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
