Protesters have gathered outside Spain's parliament in Madrid to mourn Maricarmen Abascal, an 87-year-old woman whose eviction from her lifelong home made her the face of Spain's housing crisis. She died weeks after being evicted. Abascal was evicted from her Madrid home in September, where she had lived for more than seven decades. Her eviction sparked demonstrations across the country, turning one woman's struggle into a wider fight over soaring rents, evictions and access to housing. The protests have put pressure on Spain's government. Housing measures were rejected in parliament last week, and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has since called a snap election for November 29, putting housing at the centre of the political debate.
