The UK Conservative Party has spent its conference in Birmingham trying to answer one question: who are they now? Leader Kemi Badenoch's closing speech promised renewal for a party that is out of power, third in the polls with around 20% support, and one of three parties fighting for the right-wing vote. Badenoch told delegates that the party has acknowledged its mistakes, and that in 2024 voters gave their verdict on the rows, plots and infighting. She pitched a platform she says has something for everyone, from locking up criminals to getting people on welfare into work and protecting pensions.
