Kenya's HIV programmes falter after US funding cuts, patients suffer

Community health groups in Kisumu, Kenya, say US funding cuts have devastated HIV/AIDS support networks, forcing outreach programmes to scale back drastically. One group reported condom distribution falling from 30,000 to just 1,000 monthly, while home visits to vulnerable patients have stopped entirely. Kisumu's HIV prevalence remains four times Kenya's national average, a legacy of the epidemic's severe impact on lakeshore fishing communities since the 1980s. Antiretroviral medicines remain available at government clinics, but health officials warn that without restored funding, decades of progress against the virus could unravel, with the gravest consequences still ahead.
