Israeli opposition challenges Netanyahu on security but backs continued wars

Israel is preparing for parliamentary elections on October 27, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seeking another term amid growing opposition over his handling of the country's security and regional wars. Opposition parties are presenting themselves as an alternative on security and foreign policy, but most are not calling for an end to Israel's military campaigns. Gadi Eisenkot, whose Yashar party is leading several recent polls, says Netanyahu failed to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear capability and has called for the removal of Iran's enriched uranium. Yair Lapid has gone further, arguing that Israel and its allies should target Iranian energy infrastructure to put pressure on the country's economy. Former prime minister Naftali Bennett has called for a regional alliance against Iran and what he describes as Islamist and “radical” forces, including Qatar and Turkiye. The opposition and Netanyahu's coalition also share support for maintaining Israel's occupation of southern Lebanon, highlighting how the election debate is focused more on how Israel fights its wars than whether it should continue them.
