Nepal floods: Former MP loses 40 family members in Rasuwa disaster

Nepal is still assessing the scale of destruction caused by last month's flash floods, which swept away entire towns and villages near the border with China's autonomous region of Tibet. At least 1,350 people have been confirmed dead and another 5,000 are missing and presumed buried under the mud. In the worst-hit Rasuwa district, former MP Dawa Finjo survived only because he had returned to his ancestral home for a funeral and was away from Syapru Besi when the flood struck. He lost his son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren, while about 40 relatives across both sides of his family are also missing or dead. Much of Syapru Besi, a town popular with trekkers and tourists, has been washed away, leaving only a few structures standing on higher ground. Finjo says rebuilding the devastated valley could take 15 to 20 years, highlighting the enormous challenge facing communities still recovering from the disaster.
