Fighting in northern Ethiopia has entered a new and potentially critical phase, with federal forces making fresh advances in Tigray while clashes continue in Amhara and Afar. Federal forces have taken control of Alamata and are advancing towards the Tigray regional capital, Mekelle, according to a military source cited by Al Jazeera. In Afar, the regional governor says Eritrean forces are participating in the fighting and have taken control of more than two-thirds of the region. Tens of thousands of civilians are reported trapped, while the Afar governor has appealed for international intervention to protect Eritrean refugees in areas now controlled by Eritrean forces.
