‘Dreams never die’: Sudanese refugee struggles as aid cuts hit Kenya

UN funding shortages and cuts to aid contributions are forcing humanitarian agencies to scale back operations, leaving refugees with less support. In Kenya’s Kakuma Refugee Camp, Sudanese refugee Pang Ismail says aid cuts have directly affected her livelihood and family. Ismail first arrived in Kakuma in 2011 before returning to Sudan to study physiotherapy, but was displaced again by the war that began in 2023. She returned to the camp without completing the process of becoming a licensed physiotherapist and now works with Humanity & Inclusion, supporting people with disabilities. Ismail says around 60 percent of the aid previously available to refugees has been cut, leaving only about 40 percent of UNHCR support. She says most of the small income she receives goes towards food, leaving little for other needs. Despite the hardship, Ismail says she still hopes to return to Sudan and complete her physiotherapy career when it is safe to do so. She says her dream has not died, but will take longer to achieve.
