Canadian writer Anne Carson has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. The announcement was made in Stockholm on Thursday, a day before the Peace Prize in Oslo. Carson described the moment as “a little insane”, saying she was not expecting the accolade. Carson, born in Toronto, is the 123rd laureate since the honour was inaugurated by Alfred Nobel’s will. The Swedish Academy commended her for translating and reworking classic Greek and Latin tales for a modern audience, including works such as “Autobiography of Red”. Nobel Committee member Steve Sem-Sandberg said her writing connects contemporary readers, used to screens and modern problems, with the literature of antiquity. She is the 30th winner to write in English, and only a handful of laureates have written in non-European, non-Western languages. The prize carries $1.2 million in cash, and the fame can be life- and career-changing, turning winners into rock stars. Al Jazeera’s Paul Rhys reports from Stockholm.
