Wells Fargo CEO Charlie Scharf has indicated that the bank is actively preparing for potential opportunities in the stablecoin market within the United States. During the third-quarter earnings call on October 13, Scharf noted that while the use cases for stablecoins in the US remain unclear, Wells Fargo is developing solutions to be ready as opportunities arise.
The bank is increasing investments in both traditional and digital payment services for consumers and businesses, including new settlement systems to improve corporate settlement processes. Wells Fargo has also made investments and formed business partnerships in the digital asset space, with reports suggesting talks with Kraken's parent company for further cryptocurrency service pathways.
In a significant development, Wells Fargo is collaborating with 20 other major international financial institutions, including Bank of America, Citi, Goldman Sachs, and Deutsche Bank, to establish a new company that will issue stablecoins. The consortium announced plans in September to form this entity in the second half of 2026, with the aim of launching its first U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoin in the first half of 2027. The proposed stablecoin is intended to serve both retail and institutional customers, facilitating cross-border payments and digital asset settlements, with plans to eventually support other major currencies like the euro.
In addition to these forward-looking plans, Wells Fargo has already launched tokenized deposits for its corporate and commercial clients, utilizing its blockchain platform to enable 24-hour payment capabilities. This move aligns with broader industry trends, as other financial institutions like HSBC and Ant Digital have also been testing similar tokenized deposit payment systems.
Wells Fargo reported a third-quarter net income of $5.95 billion, an increase from $5.59 billion in the same period last year. Revenue grew by 2% to $21.87 billion, supported by growth across various banking segments.
