The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has fined three companies a total of £6 million for employing misleading sales tactics that deceived consumers. Online retail giant Wayfair received the largest penalty of £4.8 million for falsely advertising products with time-limited offers, such as 'Here Today, Gone Tomorrow' messages and countdown timers, when many items remained available at the same or lower prices after the advertised deadline. Appliances Direct was fined £1.2 million for similar misleading offers and for automatically opting customers into paid services like recycling and installation without their explicit consent. Gold's Gym was fined £45,000 for failing to clearly present the total price of its memberships, including joining fees. The CMA stated that these practices put pressure on consumers, particularly at a time when many households are managing tight budgets. All three companies admitted to breaking consumer protection laws and engaged constructively with the CMA's investigation, leading to a 40% reduction in their fines. Wayfair and Appliances Direct have been ordered to refund customers approximately £432,000 and £9,000 respectively, with customers not needing to take any action as the companies will contact them directly. Wayfair and Appliances Direct have called the fines disproportionate, while Appliances Direct's owner criticized the CMA's process.
