US Vice President JD Vance has stated that Washington's current focus is on ensuring the "free flow of commerce" through the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking to Fox News, Vance explained that recent US strikes on Larak Island were a direct response to Iran's imminent efforts to lay mines in the critical waterway.
Vance characterized Iran's leadership as acting "not with a whole lot of strategic wisdom" and described them as "really crazy" for attempting to restrict oil and gas exports, even at the expense of their allies. He indicated that the US is actively working to establish a safe shipping route through the Strait.
These remarks come as Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is dependent on Washington accepting Tehran's conditions. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also commented that while negotiations with Oman were close to a temporary shipping route, the full reopening of the strait would require additional conditions and compensation for alleged US violations of a memorandum of understanding. Araghchi noted that traffic had reached 60 percent of normal conditions before the US allegedly sought to establish new routes.
