The US government generated $627 million by selling Anthropic shares that had been forfeited by Caroline Ellison and Nishad Singh, former executives at Sam Bankman-Fried's defunct crypto companies. The shares were sold in October 2025 at $140.9676 per share. Anthropic repurchased these shares and resold them to nine investors without making a profit. This stake represented about a quarter of a percent of Anthropic. If the AI company achieves a $1.5 trillion valuation in its expected November IPO, these shares could be worth approximately $3.94 billion, a sixfold increase from the government's sale price.
