The acting US envoy to Nicaragua, Elias Baumann, has returned to Washington for consultations following the Nicaraguan government's rejection of the US nominee for ambassador, Natasha Franceschi. The State Department stated that the decision by co-Presidents Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo demonstrates "the hypocrisy of their rhetoric of mutual respect and their desire to engage in political theater at the expense of the Nicaraguan people."
Franceschi had been confirmed by the US Senate for the ambassadorial post. Her nomination was denied approval by the Ortega-Murillo regime, as confirmed by US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau during a meeting of foreign ministers of the Organization of American States (OAS). Landau stated that Murillo and Ortega "have consistently closed the door to productive dialogue" and that their rejection of the ambassador "demonstrating their unwillingness to show a genuine commitment to diplomacy."
Franceschi had previously pledged to maintain diplomatic pressure on the regime while seeking a negotiated solution to the country's crisis. This is the second time the Nicaraguan government has denied approval for a US-nominated ambassador, following a similar situation in 2023 with Hugo Rodríguez. The last US ambassador to Nicaragua, Kevin K. Sullivan, concluded his assignment in May 2023, after which the embassy operated under chargés d’affaires.
