President Donald Trump said on Monday that he is considering firing US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle, following reports of misconduct. Trump told reporters, "Well, we're looking at it. Yeah, we're not happy."
The State Department's Office of the Inspector General is investigating Guilfoyle amid allegations that she accepted lavish gifts and sought money in exchange for access to administration figures before her confirmation. Lawyers for Guilfoyle have denied these allegations, stating that she complied with federal gift and reporting requirements and that Deters owed her money for speeches and consulting work.
According to a source familiar with the matter, Trump is expected to decide soon whether to dismiss Guilfoyle. The president offered no defense of Guilfoyle when questioned by CNN about the allegations on Friday, stating, "I just heard about it. Too bad. I mean, I don’t know."
Eric Deters, a former Trump donor, told CNN that he plans to sue Guilfoyle and her lawyers for defamation after they disputed the authenticity of text messages he claims she sent him, asking him to wire her $100,000 to pay off an American Express card before her Senate confirmation. Deters stated he had not been contacted by the inspector general's office but had reached out to White House chief of staff Susie Wiles.
