Trump's new Air Force One faces security concerns and operational mishaps

President Donald Trump's new interim Air Force One, a VC-25B Bridge aircraft, has experienced a series of security concerns and operational mishaps since its introduction. The customized Boeing 747-8i, valued at approximately $400 million and gifted by the Qatari royal family, is intended to serve as a bridge between older VC-25A planes and Boeing's future VC-25B jets.

On June 19, Trump unveiled the aircraft at Joint Base Andrews. The plane boasts a range of 8,900 miles and four GEnx-2B engines, each with 66,500 pounds of thrust, allowing it to fly faster and farther than its predecessors. It also features a red, white, and blue color scheme advocated by Trump.

Following its first overseas trip to Turkey for a NATO summit on July 8, questions arose about the VC-25B Bridge's safety and defensive capabilities. Reports indicated the new aircraft lacked the antimissile systems present on previous presidential planes. The New York Times reported that Trump was secretly transferred to a C-32A via a catering truck due to threats from Iran for his return trip to the UK, with the VC-25A serving as a decoy. The Justice Department later withdrew subpoenas issued to New York Times journalists who reported on the incident.

On July 19, Trump announced the VC-25B Bridge would be removed from service for about a month for undisclosed enhancements. The most recent incident occurred on September 9, when Trump's flight to Dallas was delayed after military personnel accidentally triggered the plane's emergency slide on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews. Trump told reporters that crew members were checking the slide, and the flight proceeded after a 20-minute delay.
