South Korean Unification Minister Chung Dong-young expressed optimism that the scaled-back joint military drills between South Korea and the United States could pave the way for dialogue with North Korea. The annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise was shortened, concluding a week earlier than planned, following an order from U.S. President Donald Trump.
Chung stated his support for Trump's decision, emphasizing that making things safer, as Trump described, was the core reason for the reduction. He noted that the shared objective of the alliance is peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. Trump had argued in a social media post that the drills sent an "inappropriate and hostile" signal to North Korea, and that scaling them back would enhance security.
The minister indicated that the reduced military exercises create an opportunity for talks, as North Korea has long viewed joint exercises as a key element of Washington's hostile policy. He referenced North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's February statement that Pyongyang would have no reason to oppose the U.S. if Washington abandoned its hostile policy.
