Stifel Financial is scaling back its European operations by closing its UK equities trading business and shuttering equity research in Zurich and Frankfurt. This strategic retrenchment aims to shift the firm towards a more advisory-centric, capital-light business model in Europe. The closure of the UK equities trading unit, confirmed on December 1, 2025, follows a re-evaluation of the firm's UK sales trading unit. Stifel stated that the decision is designed to position the firm for sustained success by concentrating on high-growth opportunities where it has a competitive advantage. The firm will continue to provide services such as corporate broking, equity research sales, and execution services for European financial institutions through its investment banking arm, KBW. Additionally, clients will still have access to UK and EU-based execution services and US research. The closure of research operations in Zurich and Frankfurt signifies a recalibration of the firm's European footprint after its 2019 acquisition of MainFirst, which had built a pan-European research platform. Equity research in Europe has faced margin pressure since MiFID II, making it challenging for mid-tier brokers to maintain extensive research infrastructure without a robust trading business. Stifel continues to operate offices in London, Frankfurt, Zurich, Geneva, Milan, Paris, and Madrid.
