Eight people were injured in a stabbing spree at a commercial complex in Incheon, South Korea, on Tuesday, according to police.
The 59-year-old suspect attacked victims with knives fastened to both his hands at 1:40 p.m. while on an escalator between the second basement floor and the second floor above ground. He was subdued by shoppers and later apprehended by police.
All eight victims were taken to hospitals. One woman in her 20s suffered cardiac arrest but recovered after emergency surgery, though she has not regained consciousness. Police plan to seek an arrest warrant for the suspect after questioning him about his motive.
Authorities said the suspect was found with a large quantity of drugs and was wearing an electronic ankle monitor due to a 2019 conviction for attempted murder. He reportedly told police he had taken drugs at the time of the attack.
President Lee Jae Myung visited the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency to receive a briefing and called for a thorough investigation. He also ordered "special" measures against violent crimes and a review of the ankle monitor management system. The justice ministry issued an apology and stated it would comprehensively reexamine the electronic monitoring system.
