Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi has drawn criticism for his performance during an interview at the Hudson Institute in Washington, D.C. Videos shared on X showed the president giggling, wheezing, and mumbling through a fireside chat, which some US and Israeli news outlets had characterized as a high-stakes visit to secure US recognition.
When asked about critical minerals Somaliland could offer in exchange for recognition, Abdullahi laughed and stated he was not a geologist, suggesting "maybe everything." He also appeared flustered when discussing the war in Sudan, comparing its distance from Somaliland to that of Venezuela, despite Sudan's border being only 750km away. A former US intelligence official described Abdullahi as an "aging leader not fully able to deliver the brief."
Somaliland declared independence in 1991 after a civil war and is recognized only by Israel. The country has recently gained attention for its strategic location on the Gulf of Aden, opposite Yemen. Israel recognized Somaliland in January 2026, with the UAE also having a military presence in the port of Berbera. Abdullahi presented the diplomatic deal with Israel as routine, noting it was the only country to respond to his "petition" for recognition.
