NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has urged allied nations to increase military aid to Ukraine, with a particular focus on air defense systems, as Russia escalates its aerial bombardments of Kyiv. Rutte's plea comes amid daily Russian drone and ballistic missile attacks that have left hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians without power.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that over 600,000 people across Ukraine lost electricity on Wednesday following deadly Russian strikes. He also emphasized the critical need for early warning intelligence on missile launches, stating that his country received no such notification ahead of recent ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv. Zelenskyy noted that intelligence on Russian ballistic missile launches helps save lives and prevent casualties.
The situation is further complicated by tensions between the US and Ukraine. President Donald Trump has reportedly threatened to curtail vital intelligence sharing with Kyiv due to Ukraine's continued targeting of Russian diesel infrastructure, which he believes is contributing to surging fuel prices in the US. Trump, however, denied withholding intelligence sharing when questioned by reporters.
Rutte, speaking alongside Estonian Prime Minister Kristan Michal, dismissed concerns about the US withdrawing intelligence, citing Trump's denial. Michal affirmed Estonia's commitment to continued military support for Ukraine, stating that Russia aims to weary European allies of their support for Kyiv.
