- Canberra does not recognize any self-proclaimed independent governing bodies on Norfolk Island.
A group of Norfolk Island residents has sought clarification from Australian Territories Minister Kristy McBain regarding the island's leadership, citing concerns over Leah Honeywood's international representation as a leader. This situation arises amidst a broader movement for secession, with hundreds of residents participating in an unauthorized vote on New Year's Day to leave Australia. The groups organizing the vote, the Norfolk Island Council of Elders and For The People Norfolk Island, assert a historical claim to the island predating Australia's formation. They advocate for a return to laws from the 1850s, when they believe Queen Victoria granted the island autonomy, and view Australia's 112-year rule as an "overreach." Canberra, however, maintains that such self-proclaimed governing bodies lack legal foundation and has formally administered Norfolk Island since 1914, having previously provided a limited self-government system until 2015.
