Japan is set to provide approximately 100 billion yen ($636 million) over four years to support the mass production of next-generation flexible perovskite solar cells. This initiative aims to bolster the country's strengths in the technology and foster competition with China. Panasonic Holdings Corp. is accelerating its plans to mass-produce solar cells that can be embedded in glass, with large-scale production slated to begin in April 2029 at a facility in Nagahama, Shiga prefecture. The company has already started selling units made at its development site in Osaka in September. These thin and lightweight perovskite cells are expected to be installed on surfaces unsuitable for conventional solar panels, such as windows and exterior walls, addressing limited roof space in urban areas.
