A 14-year-old Israeli boy was killed and 24 people were injured on Monday by what was most likely an unexploded ordnance that detonated during a school hiking trip near the border with Lebanon, Israel's ambulance service said. The area is known to be littered with explosive devices from past conflicts between Israel and the Lebanese militia group Hezbollah.
Deputy Commissioner Meir Eliyahu stated at the scene that an unexploded device had most likely gone off after being picked up by one of the students. Paramedic Efrat Ohana noted that the injuries were most likely the result of shrapnel impact. The Israeli military indicated that the device was likely an unexploded cluster munition originating from Hezbollah. Some 22 boys, two of whom were seriously injured, and two adults sustained injuries in the incident. Israel's chief of police, Daniel Levy, said authorities would review whether to halt school trips in the region.
