Iran proposes SCO energy consortium to boost regional cooperation

Rajabi also advocated for synchronizing electricity grids among SCO members as a means to tackle power shortages and bolster regional energy cooperation. He noted that the idea was first introduced in 2024 and that member states had reacted favorably to a draft framework. Iran is pursuing expanded cooperation through regional electricity markets, smart-grid initiatives, and cross-border energy connections, while simultaneously diversifying its own energy sources via a significant solar expansion program and increased nuclear power generation.

During the meeting in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Rajabi presented five operational initiatives for developing energy cooperation within the SCO. These included forming the energy consortium, developing regional electricity grid connections, establishing a regional electricity market framework, technological cooperation in smart grids, and organizing an annual electricity conference for member countries. He also condemned recent attacks on Iran's energy facilities, emphasizing their protected status under international conventions.
