Iran, Israel trade barbs as regional tensions simmer

Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian accused the US and Israel of attempting to create and exacerbate "internal divisions" within the country, according to state media. Pezeshkian stated that "enemies have focused their entire plan on creating and intensifying internal divisions" after failing to force the Iranian people to surrender through military war.

In Israel, opposition leader Yair Lapid accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of stoking security fears, claiming that enemies might attack ahead of the October 27 elections. Lapid reportedly requested an urgent security briefing after Netanyahu stated on Tuesday that there were "indications" that Israel’s enemies could try to attack the country before elections began. Lapid criticized Netanyahu, saying he "ignored every warning before October 7 and now, 28 days before the election, he’s suddenly busy fearmongering."

Iran's foreign ministry also issued a warning on Tuesday, stating that Israel's presence in the region was creating a "dangerous situation." This statement followed the confirmation of Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the UAE, which the ministry slammed as occurring at a "sensitive time" amid ongoing Israeli attacks on Iran, Lebanon, and Palestine.

Qatar's prime minister, in an interview with Piers Morgan, accused his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, of being a "war criminal." He stressed that Doha would continue its mediation efforts despite escalating regional tensions, stating, "Hospitals have been targeted, schools have been targeted. Whatever the justifications and the arguments, nothing is justifying this."

Separately, a senior Saudi official on Wednesday denied reports of a meeting between representatives from Saudi Arabia and Israeli officials. Israeli media had reported that such a meeting occurred on Sunday during Netanyahu's visit to Abu Dhabi, where he met UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, with representatives from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Libya, Qatar, and Morocco allegedly present.
