A memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran has triggered a debate across the US Congress, with lawmakers divided over its implications for Iran's reconstruction and the broader costs of ongoing conflicts.
Democratic Senator John Hickenlooper criticized the arrangement, stating on X that while Americans face rising costs, "Iran gets money back" and US citizens do not, calling the situation "despicable."
Other lawmakers focused on the broader implications and costs of war. Senator Chris Van Hollen argued that Democrats should recognize the war as a "blunder" and acknowledge there is "no good way out of a bad war," adding, "When you're in a hole, stop digging."
Senator Elizabeth Warren criticized reports that the Pentagon is seeking an additional $80 billion to cover war-related costs, calling the government's priorities "outrageous" and writing that "There is always money for war halfway around the world."
Republican Senator Rand Paul voiced strong support for President Donald Trump's approach, stating that "proponents of forever wars have zero credibility."
