Indian Oil Corporation will slightly reduce its Middle East crude oil purchases for the 2027/2028 fiscal year due to supply uncertainty. The refiner is shifting sourcing to South America to offset disruptions and higher costs linked to regional conflicts.

India's decision to reduce Middle East crude purchases impacts global oil flows and pricing, as the country is a major importer. The shift to alternative sources and producer discounts highlights the market's response to geopolitical risks affecting supply and freight costs.
India's largest state-owned refiner, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), plans to slightly reduce its purchases of Middle East crude oil under annual term deals for the 2027/2028 fiscal year, according to an anonymous source. The move comes amid supply uncertainties and increased costs stemming from regional conflicts and attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. IOC had initially planned to source 47% of its crude from the Middle East. To compensate for lost supply from the Persian Gulf, Indian refiners are increasingly turning to the spot market and sourcing additional volumes from South America, including Brazil, Venezuela, and Ecuador. Middle Eastern producers are reportedly offering discounts and covering some freight costs to maintain their market share in Asia.
