Fortress Investment Group, the US owner of discount retailer Poundstretcher, has withdrawn its bid to acquire rival Poundland. The move comes as Poundland's current owner, Gordon Brothers, is seeking to sell the business.
Gordon Brothers, which bought Poundland for a nominal £1 in June 2025, appointed Alvarez & Marsal in September 2026 to manage the sale process. The advisory firm was understood to be engaging with Fortress alongside other interested parties, with first-round bids expected in early October.
However, Fortress has now pulled out of the running. This leaves the door open for other potential buyers, including a management buyout team. This team, reportedly including former Poundland boss Andy Bond and current chief executive Barry Williams, is understood to be in advanced talks to lead a bid for the retailer.
Poundland has been struggling financially, reporting a pre-tax loss of £85.2m for the year to September 2025 on revenues of around £1.5-1.6bn. The company operates approximately 600 stores and employs 11,000 people. A combination with Poundstretcher, which has close to 300 stores, would create a discount group of around 900 locations and 15,000 staff, though Fortress was reportedly not considering a merger of the brands at this time.
