Poundland's owner, Gordon Brothers, is exploring a sale of the discount retailer, just over a year after acquiring it for £1. The management team, led by managing director Barry Williams and reportedly including former Poundland boss Andy Bond, is in advanced talks for a potential buyout with a financial backer. Other parties, including Fortress and Modella Capital, have shown interest but are not involved in the management-led proposal. Poundland currently operates around 600 stores and employs approximately 11,000 to 12,000 people. The potential sale comes despite recent signs of improvement in the retailer's trading performance, with profitability on an improving trajectory and an expected significant increase in pre-tax earnings compared to the £85 million loss recorded in the year to September 2025. Gordon Brothers acquired Poundland from Pepco Group in June 2025 as part of a rescue, which was followed by a restructuring that closed around 149 stores and resulted in job losses.
