The flash floods in Nepal's Gorkha district have resulted in loss of life, destruction of villages and infrastructure, and stranded tourists, highlighting the vulnerability of the region to natural disasters.
Flash floods swept through Nepal’s central Gorkha district on October 11 after a pre-dawn landslide blocked the Budhi Gandaki River. The blockage triggered severe downstream flooding, with river levels surging from 2 meters to nearly 8.5 meters within hours. At least five people died, and almost 100 were rescued. Two villages in the Chumanubri rural municipality were reportedly destroyed, with homes, roads, and bridges washed away. Part of a hydropower station was also damaged. The national disaster risk reduction and management authority reported that 204 homes were damaged, and more than 650 people had been affected. More than 100 foreign trekkers were stranded in the popular hiking region.
