Fitch Ratings stated on Thursday that Hungary's draft budget for 2027 supports its goal of meeting the conditions for adopting the euro by 2030. The government plans to reduce the general government deficit to 4.9% of GDP from an expected 7.5% this year through spending cuts and tax increases. Fitch cautioned that implementing these deficit-reduction measures would be challenging due to the numerous small steps involved and the need for sustained consolidation. The agency projects Hungary's public debt to peak at 77.7% of GDP in 2027-2028. Meeting the budget targets is only one part of the euro adoption criteria, which also include inflation, long-term interest rates, and exchange-rate stability.
