The reported attack on a major Russian oil refinery raises concerns about potential disruptions to global energy supply chains and escalations in the conflict. Such incidents can impact oil and fuel prices and highlight the vulnerability of critical energy infrastructure.
A fire has reportedly broken out at the Gazprom Neftekhim Salavat oil refinery in Russia's Bashkortostan region following an alleged drone attack. Social media footage appears to show the strike and subsequent thick smoke and flames emanating from the facility. The Kyiv Independent could not independently verify the attack.
The Gazprom Neftekhim Salavat facility is described as one of Russia's largest oil refining and petrochemical complexes, capable of processing up to 10 million tons of hydrocarbon feedstock annually and producing over 150 types of products, including gasoline and diesel fuel. It is situated approximately 1,300 to 1,400 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
This is not the first time the facility has been targeted. A source within the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) told the Kyiv Independent that SBU drones previously struck the plant on September 24, 2025, causing a fire. Additional reports from OSINT channels indicate previous fires occurred after attacks on July 14, 2026, and August 13, 2026, with one incident reportedly halting oil refining operations.
