A fire has completely destroyed the Marché des Enfants Rouges, Paris' oldest covered food market, authorities said on Monday. The blaze broke out in the early hours of the morning, around 3 a.m., and firefighters worked for several hours to bring it under control.
The historic market, located in the upscale Marais district, was established in 1615 and is known for its popular street food stalls. Lieutenant Colonel Pierre de Bouvier confirmed that "nothing remains of the covered market" and that its metal structure had "partially collapsed." Mayor of Central Paris, Ariel Weil, stated that the market was "totally destroyed" but expressed relief that the fire was contained and did not spread to neighboring buildings.
