A former Metropolitan Police officer, Mark Tyrrell, is on trial accused of raping a sleeping woman. The court heard Tyrrell, 57, had received specialized training in dealing with sex offense victims. He denies multiple charges including rape, sexual assault, and assault by penetration.
The case raises questions about the conduct of law enforcement officers and the potential for abuse of power, particularly given the defendant's specialized training in handling sex offense victims.
A former Metropolitan Police officer, Mark Tyrrell, 57, is on trial at Southwark Crown Court facing charges of rape, sexual assault, and assault by penetration against one woman over approximately two years. The prosecution stated that Tyrrell had received specialized training in Sexual Offences Investigation Techniques (SOIT).
Concerns were first raised when officers attending the alleged victim's address for an unrelated matter discovered Tyrrell hiding beside her bed. The court heard that Tyrrell later contacted the woman, claiming no sexual activity had occurred. The woman alleges that she woke on multiple occasions to find Tyrrell penetrating her, despite having previously refused sex.
During a police interview, Tyrrell denied having sexual intercourse with the woman. However, he has since admitted to misconduct in a public office and perverting the course of justice by attempting to persuade the woman to provide a false account to the police regarding his presence in her bedroom. The trial continues.
