The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has resulted in over 2,500 deaths and is spreading exponentially across an area larger than France, according to senior UN Ebola coordinator Julien Harneis. This epidemic has become the deadliest in the country's history, surpassing the previous outbreak from 2018-2020. The Bundibugyo species of Ebola causing the current outbreak has no approved vaccines or treatments.
Harneis highlighted that response efforts are outpaced by the virus's spread and are further complicated by rampant insecurity and distrust among locals. Healthcare workers and frontline responders have faced attacks from youths, with ambulances and facilities being targeted. In total, 160 healthcare workers have fallen ill, and 43 have died from the disease. Aid cuts in recent years have also reduced the capacity of humanitarian organizations, and challenges in delivering cash for personnel payments due to banking service disruptions are further hindering the response.
