Venture capital firm Paradigm has successfully raised $1.2 billion for its fourth fund, marking a significant expansion of its investment strategy beyond its traditional focus on cryptocurrency into artificial intelligence and robotics.
The firm, founded in 2018 by Matt Huang and Coinbase co-founder Fred Ehrsam, has established itself as a major player in crypto investments. This new fund, however, signals a deliberate broadening of its scope to encompass what it terms the “technical frontier.”
Paradigm has already made investments outside the crypto space, including in the drone-delivery firm Zipline, valued at $7.6 billion, and the space-defense startup True Anomaly, valued at $2.2 billion. This strategic shift aligns with current market trends, as AI startups attracted approximately 70% of global venture funding in the last quarter, while crypto deal counts have seen a sharp decline.
Managing partner Alana Palmedo stated that the expansion is driven by the abundance of opportunities rather than a retreat from crypto, emphasizing that crypto remains an exciting area but other developments are too significant to ignore. Paradigm maintains its commitment to crypto, having recently co-led a $175 million round for Morpho and invested in a tokenized-Treasuries startup.
Meanwhile, BNB Chain is developing a new Layer-1 blockchain designed for autonomous AI agents to execute trades and manage portfolios, aiming for high transaction speeds and self-custody. This move enters a competitive landscape with other high-throughput chains.
In broader market news, crypto majors saw a slight rebound, with Bitcoin trading around $62.7k. Bitcoin ETFs experienced net outflows, while Ethereum ETFs saw inflows. Meme coins showed minor gains, and some specific tokens like ARB and LIT led altcoin movers. NFT markets were largely flat, though some AI art-related NFTs saw significant gains. In the DeFi space, Zapper is winding down operations, while Polymarket is launching a marketing campaign to regain trust in the US.
