China's consumption patterns are shifting, with spending on services significantly outpacing purchases of physical goods during the first seven months of 2026. This trend is primarily fueled by strong demand in the travel and entertainment sectors.
According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, service retail sales saw a 5% year-on-year increase from January through July. In contrast, retail sales of physical goods rose by a more modest 1.1% during the same period. Overall retail sales of consumer goods climbed 1.2% to 28.77 trillion yuan, equivalent to approximately $4.3 trillion.
The widening gap between services and goods spending indicates a structural change in China's economy, as the government increasingly relies on the services sector to compensate for weaker demand in traditional merchandise.
