The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is initiating a public comment period on futures contracts related to artificial intelligence computing capacity. This move comes as exchanges like CME Group prepare to launch products in this nascent market. The CFTC has sent a request for comment to the White House Office of Management and Budget for review, a step that could impact the planned October 5 launch of CME's compute futures contracts. These contracts aim to make AI computing power a tradable commodity, allowing companies and investors to hedge against its cost. Silicon Data will supply the pricing benchmarks for CME's proposed contracts. The development of these futures reflects the growing economic significance of AI, with infrastructure spending estimated to reach 2% to 2.5% of U.S. GDP this year, according to various financial institutions.
